Chad Ray Sworn in as District 3 Commissioner

After the unfortunate passing of former District Three Commissioner Charlie Cartwright earlier this year, his opponent in Chad Ray was elected in the June primary election. Because Ray does not have a challenger in November's general election, he was sworn in as to serve out the remainder of Cartwright's term on Thursday.

From an Osage County Government Facebook video, here is District Judge Stuart Tate talking about how the process works.

In January, Bridget West will take over as county treasurer, Ed Quinton will be sworn in for another term as county assessor, Brett Mize will take over the district attorney's office. Anthony Hudson and Randall Jones will face off in November's general election to determine the district one county commissioner seat.

PODCAST: Brecheen Discusses Constitution, Congress Ahead of Independence Day

U.S. Congressman Josh Brecheen appeared on KWON Radio's Community Connection ahead of the Independence Day holiday, reflecting on the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary and the principles he believes have sustained the United States since its founding.

In the podcast, Brecheen emphasized the importance of self-governance, constitutional originalism and civic education, stating that the nation should return to the founders' original intent. He criticized recent Supreme Court of the United States decision on birthright citizenship, and said Congress should operate within the Constitution's enumerated powers while courts should interpret and not create law.

Brecheen also discussed Senate filibuster rules and the proposed SAVE Act, saying that Congress has constitutional authority to establish standards for federal elections. The congressman closed by encouraging Americans to study the nation's history as communities prepare to celebrate Independence Day.

Nowata Citizens Working to Save Hospital

The hospital in Nowata is applying to reclassify and a group of citizens are trying to keep the hospital they have.

Ascension St. John has submitted an application to the Oklahoma State Department of Health to reclassify from a Critical Access Hospital to a Rural Emergency Hospital. A group of Nowata citizens have started the “Save our Hospital” movement. Group member Mike Dye says this will change what is available to residents through the hospital.

Ascension St. John says patients who need to be transported to a hospital will be stabilized in Nowata before being transferred to Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville or St. John Owasso. Group Member Cheryl Reid says this not only affects the patients who would have been admitted into the hospital but also their families.

The Save our Hospital group will be holding a community event and meeting on Sunday, July 12th at Nowata High School. There will be live music and free food from 1:00pm to 2:00pm and the community meeting will start at 2:00pm.

Coffeyville firefighters rescued a dog from the Verdigris River on Wednesday night after locating the animal clinging to the riverbank downstream from the city's water treatment plant.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a dog in distress on River Road below the city's water treatment plant at about 8 p.m. July 1. Firefighters launched the department's rescue boat and found the dog about 50 yards downstream, where it was holding onto the riverbank.

During the rescue, the frightened dog bit one of the firefighters, causing minor superficial injuries. Despite the bite, firefighters safely brought the dog aboard the rescue boat.

The dog was turned over to the Coffeyville Police Department, which transported it to Coffeyville Friends of Animals for care.

Thursday Area Lake Levels

Water levels at lakes across northeastern Oklahoma remain well above normal, but are receding as the Independence Day holiday weekend approaches.

As of Thursday morning, Hulah Lake stands more than 12 feet above its normal level, while Copan Lake is just over 11 feet above normal. The Corps of Engineers continues to limit releases from both reservoirs because of flooding concerns along the Caney River downstream.

Other area lakes also remain elevated following recent heavy rainfall, but are slowing falling.

In Osage County, Birch Lake is 4.5 feet above normal, while Skiatook Lake remains 2 feet above its typical level. Keystone Lake is 17.75 feet above normal, and Kaw Lake is just under 17 feet above normal.

In Nowata and Rogers counties, Oologah Lake remains more than 15 feet above normal.

Water levels are falling at Grand Lake, a popular holiday destination. As of Thursday morning, the reservoir is more than 5.5 feet above its normal elevation.

The elevated lake levels come as thousands of boaters, campers and anglers are expected to visit Oklahoma lakes during the Independence Day holiday. Visitors are encouraged to use caution, as high water levels can create stronger currents, floating debris and other hazards.
