The Oklahoma County Public Defender in a high profile murder case said Friday that “There's no purpose in a preliminary hearing” and “clearly the state has enough evidence” in reference to murder charges against Christian Costello in the stabbing death of his father, former Oklahoma Labor Commissioner Mark Costello.

Christian Costello is charged with first-degree murder. He's accused of fatally stabbing his father on August 23, 2015 in an Oklahoma City restaurant. Christian Costello has been treated for mental illness in the past and told Judge Lisa Hammond that he has been taking his prescribed medication.

The waiver of a preliminary hearing in such a high profile case indicates that a plea deal may be coming between prosecutors and the public defender. Christian Costello's next court appearance is scheduled for May 25. A trial date could be set at that time.
