Oklahoma Wesleyan has turned over the reins of its women’s basketball team to longtime Northeastern State assistant Heidi Messer. Messer is an Ohio native that has made several different coaching stops across the county.

She has been an assistant across multiple college levels over the past 10 years, the last five of which were spent at NSU. Messer talks about why the OKWU job was appealing to her.

The Lady Eagles basketball program has been able to find some success in recent years but has struggled with consistency. OKWU has notched just one 20-win season over the last five years.

Messer is excited to work with last year’s returning talent including leading scorer Zariah Tillman who will be entering her sophomore year. Messer says it will be her job over the next few months to fill out the roster to build a contender.

Messer takes over for Grace Hadley who led the Lady Eagles to an 18-15 record along with a trip to the KCAC tournament semifinals.
