Wright Talks Beginning of Bruin Practice

KWON had a chance to catch up with Bartlesville High head football coach Harry Wright earlier this week, as BHS is only a week or so away from official practices beginning across Oklahoma.

18 Bruins joined the 225-Club during the Night of Champions on Wednesday at Custer Stadium, an exclusive group that can power clean 225-pounds. That is about even with the number of guys who made it last year. Wright says had it not been for injuries and other commitments it would have been closer to 25.

The first week of practice will start a week from Monday. The preseason schedule is a bit compressed for Bartlesville, as for the first time since COVID BHS will play a Zero Week game.

Meet the Bruins will still be the first Friday of practice-week, that is Aug. 16 at Custer Stadium.

Wright talks about the first couple Fridays of Bartlesville’s preseason.

Bartlesville will return about 12 guys with starting experience from this past season. Graduating seniors and some transfers will take away close to half of the Bruin’s starters from a year ago.

However, Wright says depth with younger players ready to take center-stage is stronger on this fall’s team than the past couple.

He talks about what a freshman or sophomore would need to do to be ready to play this season.

Wright says there is a chance that 4 or 5 freshman and sophomores compete for starting spots.

Bartlesville will open its season on Thursday, Aug. 29 at Newcastle, one of the earliest games in the state.

We will carry Bruin football this fall on KWON – AM 1400, FM 93.3 and 95.1. Video coverage on KWONTV.com.
